What to Pack for Your Gap Year in Israel

Embarking on a gap year in Israel is an exciting adventure, and packing the right
clothing can make your experience much more enjoyable. Here’s a concise guide to
help you prepare for the diverse climate and cultural landscape. Please keep in mind
that the dorm rooms are small and closet space is limited.

  1. Lightweight, Breathable Clothing
    ● Summer Essentials: Israel’s summers are hot, especially from June to
September. Pack plenty of lightweight, breathable clothes made from natural
    fabric like cotton.
    ● Sun Protection: A wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses are crucial to shield yourself
    from the intense sun.
  2. Modest Attire for Religious Sites
    ● Cover Up: When visiting religious sites, modest clothing is required. Pack long
skirts or pants and shirts that cover your shoulders.
  3. Layering Pieces for Winter
    ● Warm Layers: Winters can be mild but vary by region. Include a mix of long-
sleeve shirts, sweaters, and a warm jacket for the cooler months (December to
March). Jerusalem is much colder than the middle of the country.
  4. Footwear
    ● Comfortable Walking Shoes: You’ll likely be doing a lot of walking, so
    comfortable shoes are a must.
    ● Sandals: For the hot days and beach trips, a sturdy pair of sandals is essential.
    ● Hiking Boots: If you plan on exploring Israel’s beautiful hiking trails, a good pair of
    hiking boots is beneficial.
  5. Beachwear
    ● Swimwear: Israel boasts some beautiful beaches. Pack 2 swimsuits and a
    lightweight cover-up.
  6. Rain Gear
    ● Light Rain Jacket: A light rain jacket is useful, especially during the rainy season
    from November to March.
    ● If you are based in Jerusalem, you will need a decent winter coat.
  7. Shabbat Clothes
    ● Dress Clothes: For Shabbat and other special occasions, bring dressier clothes.
Men might want to pack a button-down shirt and dress pants, while women could
include a nice dress or skirt and blouse.
    ● Comfortable but Respectful: Shabbat attire should be comfortable but respectful,
adhering to modesty norms where applicable.
  8. Underwear and socks
    ● Bring extra!
  9. Accessories
    ● Small Backpack: A small backpack or daypack for daily outings and excursions.
    ● Weekend away bag: An appropriate size backpack or trolley bag for going away
    for Shabbat.
    Enjoy your time in Israel!
